07:26:00
Hi 14
07:26:18
whats the weather like in ur neck of the woods
07:26:54
I was thinking the same thing about HK but glad we heard about F&M via Tara
07:29:19
Read FB: Do you have official rules that say not to zoom on people?
07:29:51
It's a privacy issue 14.
07:30:12
The cams were installed to watch geysers, not people.
07:30:36
True, it's fun to see people we know, but didn't someone last year say they felt a little creepy knowing they were being watched?
07:31:00
We do occasionally check on people if we see they are in danger (getting too close to wildlife) or breaking the law.
07:31:36
I think the cam was installed to provide visitors a view of what they might see if they come to the park...just for the record, not just geysers
07:32:28
People who wave at the cam are sometimes zoomed in on too as by waving, they appear to WANT to be seen by family and friends. A lot of times you can see those same folks are talking on cell phones. You can almost hear the conversations: Hey look mom! It's me!
07:32:30
True, they might see a bear or bison or lightning or hail!
07:32:32
I got on it about 2 years ago at BH. My wife had to stay home and spotted us waiting on the benches, but the camera was zoomed in on the cone. I thought it was fun.
07:33:49
thats the main spot where we zoom in on BHI or the cone you can see ppl behid it. Plume also
07:34:08
I had the opposite at BH this spring, I was waving at gazers across the river and when I read the logs later it was assumed I was waving at the cam.
07:34:18
And certain people at BH is another Indicator!
07:34:37
She called me and asked if we were at BH, so the picture could not have been totally clear.
07:35:19
Except for people on the bw right in front of the cam, the focus is generally not good enough to see people clearly.
07:35:33
yeah its pretty pixelated that far away, usually need to know who is going to be there to know who you are seeing there
07:36:43
Were you watching Jim at the time of that complaint? It's not worth my time to check the logs, just curious if you remember
07:36:47
I see F&M think i am in the park
07:37:07
:)
07:37:14
I hate getting texts "are you at BH?" so I just don't answer.
07:37:59
wow...step away from the computer for coffee and the page is full
07:38:19
I don't know about the cam being zoomed on Jim. He is just usually front and center when BHI is erupting, so is likely to be seen on the cam.
07:38:49
depends if its the "are you waiting at BH" question or the "go to BH becasue BHI is going" command
07:39:03
I know last week I zoomed in on a visitor off the bw by OF and someone questioned why I was doing that. I explained why at the teim.
07:39:19
in winter if my phone rang i would start to head to BH before fumbling for it
07:39:20
time. fingers not awake either.
07:39:27
I was made a manager and told them they could call me if there was a problem. I got a call about 5 minutes into BHI. Needless to say the connection was "lost" for a half hour.
07:39:38
I think ....just for the record that there was some inuendo...(sp) that had to do w a cam op that resigned

07:44:24
Graham...last night we had a vistior asking why your not including the link for this page in ur report. They were curious and i didn't know the answer
07:44:48
i stopped because all the times are coming from the online logs now
07:44:54
of course the data is entered here too
07:45:04
this has all prompted some great conversation!!
07:45:31
I should repost the chat room link again sometime and the other webcam link that seems to work (#3)
07:46:05
that would be good!
07:46:38

07:48:20

07:49:04
the online tool link is great..I use it here for aiming the cam and used it in the park along w the VEC pred center. but i still hold that for recording purposes the log book is the source!

08:00:23
that many people reporting to the online sites are reporting from other source thinking that they have actually seen the eruption when they are actually getting the info 3rd hand
08:01:05
for example Jims am report includes times called from others, but are being log on the sites and Jims observation
08:01:16
as = and
08:01:18
That's kinda related to my thought about names, everything at 7am can be attributed to Jim

All of these issues raise the point of needing to be specific in the entries and particularily in the comments.
08:02:35
we had some discussion before on what fields to capture online ....
08:02:50
the reporter, observer , but what if its 3rd hand?
08:03:23
If we KNOW it is third hand (FRS comes to mind) that info should be in the comments.
08:03:24
eventually we all give up and went with something fairly simple
08:03:49
its still better than the NPS log that just has a time - but then that log is limited as to who enters data
08:04:11
their point was that, and especially w the radio communication problems in the basin lately, info can be heard wrong and thus reported wrong
08:04:59
yep, always a problem cb .. and typos ....
08:05:13
have to keep it simple enough so ppl actually continue to report and log times :)
08:05:21
Yes, I was just going to say you have to be good at entering ##'s
08:06:24
now and then there are complaints about who is or isn't allowed to enter times in the NPS log - always an imperfect system
08:06:30
yes. and like i said it is VERY handy in the park...those of us w gadgets!!
08:06:35

08:08:27
Yes those with smarty phones can make good use of it, I think that's the best use
08:09:50
Those who collect data will use downloads, so my opinion is these cites are for gazing, webcam and fun.
08:10:01
was useful with Jake last Sept, coming back from LGB or elsewhere could see what had been logged .. needed it to keep up wit hthe BHI cycle
08:10:57
true 14 as long as the monitors are working and the reporting algorithms are correct
08:11:40
and for the geysers that are monitored (not many really in the bigger scheme of things)
08:11:55
True.
08:12:39
don't get the exciting sputnik series on Ralphs page
08:12:58
but then again Jakes algorithm doesn't let them all get displayed either :(
08:13:56
I just feel the tenor of it all has changed, and perhaps being taken too seriously.
08:14:14
All reports should be encouraged.
08:15:06
They can be edited or flagged if you come up with something better.
08:15:22
Good point, I like the Sputnik info, haha.

08:17:54
I like the 'less' or 'better'- that's better than saying "wrong" :)
08:18:55
the only place with specific recording requirements that I know of is the OF NPS logbook which is an official government record.
08:19:56
I was just concerned with value judgements which could discourage people from continuing to add times.
08:20:10
I realize this is a work in progress! And I think it's great that we have these sites.
08:22:02
It's also useful to know sometimes (e.g. historical record) if it was right or wrong if there is a sound truth to go by. Anyway this is sounding more like work now and way too serious for SUnday morning. Thats the last from me.
08:22:14
I still want to ask opinions about Tilt vs Tilt's Baby. Do we know why some say one and some say the other?
08:22:53
there are two features with seperate vents
08:22:59
that was easy :)
